If I recall correctly, historical tubs were (indeed!) wooden, made like a barrel if not an actual barrel; copper; and whatever they made fountains of. Probably other materials I haven't thought of yet. Anyone for a reed mat bathtub? lol

Msgranger, I very well remember an original, huge, cast iron clawfoot tub that, at 6, I could swim in. You simply ran hot water to cover the bottom of the tub, then waited 5 minutes before adding bubbles, more water both hot and cold, and kid. Pre-warming the metal tub was key to success, as in, wrinkled fingers before cold water! And we know from cooking class how well cast iron holds heat, eh? A mere trickle, nearly silent, of hot water prolonged my baths quite nicely, although Mom swears now she was aware of my sly trickery!
