84-Square-Foot Bathroom With Soft Color and an Open Feel
Muted shades, curated tile and botanical patterns define a teen’s en suite designed for function and longevity
A whole-home renovation that reworked walls, reconfigured rooms and eliminated awkward circulation paths created an opportunity for a fresh start in this 84-square-foot en suite bathroom in Portola Valley, California. The homeowners — a couple with three children — wanted a stylish, functional space for their teenage daughter that would feel at home within the house’s modern Italian-inspired design. They turned to husband-and-wife design-build team Roi and Ofir Omer, who used Houzz Pro software to bring the vision to life.
A white oak vanity with reeded-front detailing and a terra-cotta pink finish establishes a warm, natural foundation, while a glass-enclosed low-curb shower helps the room feel open and expansive. Floral-patterned and sky blue wall tiles introduce color, texture and personality, and a botanical wallpaper accent wall adds another layer of visual interest.

A thick quartz countertop and 4-inch backsplash add durability and provide protection from standing water. “It’s a kid’s bathroom so I always recommend quartz,” Ofir says.

A colorful floral wallpaper accent wall beside the vanity adds pattern and personality. “I love wallpaper,” Ofir says. “It adds a lot of warmth and depth to the space. I wanted to create a finished look and not have a plain area. I believe you should be open-minded about colors, patterns and textures. You can create beautiful rooms once you open your mind.”

The low-curb shower has a custom tempered glass enclosure and an operable window that brings natural light and fresh air into the bathroom while maintaining privacy. “It’s at a high height for privacy and there’s a high ceiling in there,” Ofir says.
Two different wall tiles give the shower a layered look. Floral-patterned porcelain tiles on the upper walls reinforce the room’s botanical theme, while vertically stacked sky blue porcelain tiles below add color and visual height. “I like to use two different tiles because it makes the space more unique,” Ofir says. “I used the same grout in arctic white for both tiles. I prefer not to use two different grouts because that creates too much separation.”
The shower floor is the bathroom’s only natural stone surface — honed white-and-gray marble penny round tile. A polished nickel towel bar and robe hook mounted just outside the shower keep essentials within easy reach. Large-format warm white porcelain floor tiles throughout the rest of the bathroom create a cohesive look. “We were looking for something that would fit well with the look of the shower,” Ofir says. “This specific white goes very well.”

A polished nickel rain shower head on an extended arm creates an overhead showering experience. “It’s easier to maintain this way instead of having it on the ceiling,” Ofir says.
The shower also includes a hand shower and a thermostatic valve for consistent water temperature. A long niche provides a space for shampoo, conditioner and other bath products. “We wanted it to be symmetrical with the window,” Ofir says.

A doorway links the new en suite bathroom to the daughter’s walk-in closet and custom storage system just off her bedroom. “I like all the color combinations in this bathroom and the material selections,” Ofir says. “They wanted something that would age with her and be timeless.”

The new en suite bathroom complements the rest of the home while expressing its own personality. “The mom told me she was looking for something modern but not too modern,” Ofir says. “A space that felt eclectic but also fresh and warm. We have color but we were looking for the right combination for the girl, who loves blue and also pink.”
A prefabricated white oak vanity with a reeded front and gold knobs offers ample storage and a timeless look. “Also, the panel fronts fit with the home’s modern Italian look,” Ofir says.
“The vanity is painted a terra-cotta pink, which is a warm, earthy and muted shade that falls between clay orange and dusty rose,” Roi says. “It’s a sophisticated blush tone, not a bright pink, and it leans more toward a refined clay or salmon rose.”
A partition wall to the right creates privacy for the toilet. “In the beginning, we weren’t going to have a wall there, but we wanted to create that separation between the vanity and toilet,” Ofir says.
Walls, ceiling and trim are painted a custom mushroom hue in a satin finish selected for its durability and easy maintenance. “It’s easy to clean, that’s the most important thing,” Ofir says. “I wanted to create good flow and not create any separation between the ceiling and walls.”
