A 4' farm trough is 100 galvanized gallon tank and will run ya about $75-100. Then there is the cost of paint, soil, rocks, etc. Not exactly an inexpensive project. And you have to oxygenate it or the fish will probably die.

The plants oxygenate the water. It's a self-contained biosphere.

You'll need to maintain a balance between oxygenation resources (plants and/or aeration , algae and fish. Maintenance will be necessary for "volunteered" additions. Do remember, that introducing any invasive species be it plant or fish - they can and will propagate elsewhere via birds and small animals unless the system is completely enclosed.
