I live in a house built 1918 and we have added trim in every room. I can't imagine thinking it hard to clean. It's just part of what you do to have a lovely home.
We have feet on our kitchen base units and I just wipe them when I clean the floor and vacuum them with a nozzle attachment.
We also added panel trim throughout the front entrance and up the stairway and landing and it really makes it elegant instead of boring.

Our house was built in 1892, an era in which people had both front and back parlors for entertaining at different times of day. Someone who owned the house opened the two parlors up, leaving half the room with chair rail and half without. We took the chair rail down and used it going up the stairs to the second floor. It completely changed the foyer. It looks like it has always been there.
