Becky, I used to live in Edina. Here is my theory about lots of basement remodeling going on there.

In the move or remodel debate, residents that choose to remodel do so because Edina has fabulous schools and the commuting convenience of being a first tier suburb. Since many of the homes are small-ish midcentury ranches and split-levels, they either do total teardowns (which is common) or they make every inch of available space livable.

Because Edina is upper middle class and relatively unaffected by the recession, Edina-ites are taking advantage of a home remodelers perfect storm. They are obtaining loans at a fabulously low interest rates right now. And due to the recession/recovery, there is downward pressure on contractor's prices because they are hurting for business.
