Bathroom of the Week: Modern Organic Style With a Shower Room
Arches, white oak details, limestone flooring and textured surfaces create a soothing new look and feel
For these homeowners, a built-in jetted tub, glass block shower divider and funky layout weren’t giving them the style and function they wanted in their primary bathroom. Seeking a modern organic style with European flair, they hired designer Joey Snow to bring the entire California ranch home in line with their vision. Snow uses Houzz Pro software to manage her design business.
For the bathroom, Snow replaced the built-in tub with a smaller, sleeker freestanding model that adds breathing room. She ditched the glass block wall that divided the shower from the toilet area and added a wall that better separates the two spaces. The new private shower room has an arched doorway with glass door, walls with handmade Moroccan zellige tiles and a marble bench. A custom white oak double vanity improves storage, and its reeded front adds texture. Genuine limestone batons in a herringbone pattern for the flooring, along with plaster walls, provide more texture and interest.

After: Snow stripped the bathroom back to the studs and updated all the electrical and plumbing. “We were able to help them save money by not moving everything in the bathroom,” she says. “The vanity and tub stayed in the same location.”
A smaller (59-inch) freestanding tub now sits below the updated arched window, creating an airier look and freeing up room to create a private shower room with its own entrance. A floor-mounted tub filler has a hand shower and a brass finish that coordinates with other finishes used in the room. A new arched wall niche by the tub provides display and storage space. White oak shelves and handmade zellige tiles complement details used elsewhere. “It’s meant to be functional for getting in your tub or shower, to have a place to set your jewelry down or light a candle,” Snow says.
The walls and ceiling have a creamy plaster finish that mimics the look of Venetian plaster. “It’s a European influence we brought into this space,” Snow says. “It’s a very timeless look. The client didn’t want it to feel dark and heavy in there.”
A palm-inspired chandelier made of natural coco beads and gold metal adds a touch of organic style and texture. “We try to use as many natural materials as we can in our spaces,” Snow says. “I think it also plays off the tub, which has almost a tulip shape.”

Across from the tub is an elegant custom white oak double vanity with a reeded front that adds texture and interest. “The reeded detailing is something you see on period pieces,” Snow says. “It has European history to it, and we’re bringing that element into this design. It’s very trendy now but also timeless.”
A marble countertop and short backsplash add dramatic movement. Snow used the same marble for the shower bench. “We hand-selected that piece,” Snow says. “The marble was another European influence. It’s more like art. It’s not like we picked a slab and threw it on there. It took a lot of time to decide how it would be placed on the vanity and inside the shower.”
Brass mirror frames, cabinet hardware, sconces and widespread faucets add warm metal details. The ceiling includes an upgraded exhaust fan and LED lights, which were digitally removed from these photos by the photographer to help emphasize other design elements.

With the built-in tub removed and a smaller model in its place, Snow had room to create a separate arched glass entrance to the newly created shower room. A water closet is now through the arched white oak door. ““The wife loved arches,” Snow says. “She really wanted an arched entry into the shower. It was an architectural choice that’s softer on the eye.”

Authentic limestone batons laid in a herringbone pattern on the bathroom and shower floors add a rustic touch. The limestone is water-resistant and low-maintenance and offers durability and natural beauty. “This added another texture to the space,” Snow says. “We love pairing natural stone with other natural stones. All the stone in this bathroom is handmade or comes from natural sources.”

The shower has a fixed shower head and this hand shower on a slide bar that lets the homeowners position it closer to the bench below. Authentic Moroccan zellige tiles in varying white tones wrap the walls in a modern vertical stack pattern. “It’s another way of telling an artful story in the space,” Snow says. “It’s a handmade product.”
The built-in marble shower bench coordinates with the marble vanity backsplash and countertop. “We put solid surface for durability on the shower dam but used the marble for the bench,” Snow says. The shower floor features the same limestone batons in a herringbone pattern as the main bathroom floor.

This view from inside the shower highlights the cohesive look of the arches in the updated bathroom. “That tile installation with the curved entry wasn’t easy,” Snow says. “Just that tile detail itself and the glass we did takes a lot of attention to detail. That was probably the hardest thing in the bathroom to design. Every tile had to be placed just right.” The custom arched glass shower door has unlacquered brass hardware. “We upgraded the handle on the shower door to a more European design,” Snow says.

After: Snow eliminated the built-in tub and replaced it with a freestanding model. She pushed the wall between the tub and shower over and moved the existing window to create a private shower room. A new wall creates separation between the shower room and water closet. “The bathroom has a much more open feel to it,” Snow says. “It gives them a lot of privacy, a bigger shower and a more functional vanity.”

Before: The former bathroom had this large built-in jetted tub with a basic white tiled deck eating up floor space. Blue walls and a band of blue tiles did little to perk up the area. “It was awkward to get in and out of and very dated,” Snow says. About the only redeeming quality was the arched window, which Snow used as inspiration in the updated space.
A standard double vanity sat across from the tub. A door to the right of the tub led to a room where a partial glass block wall divided areas for the shower and toilet. “It was a funky layout,” Snow says.
