Bathroom of the Week: Stylish and Efficient in 70 Square Feet
In a new addition, a designer helps create an orderly hallway bathroom with a low-curb shower and a hardworking vanity
After traveling the world and having three kids, these homeowners were ready to settle down in their forever home. They asked designer Taylor Harrison to create a second-floor addition that includes an elevated yet kid-friendly hallway bathroom for their young son and occasional overnight guests.
Harrison responded with an efficient setup in 70 square feet that includes a hardworking single-sink vanity, a toilet and a roomy low-curb shower. The couple referenced inspiration photos they saw on Houzz when deciding on a fresh and clean style. Glazed blue-gray ceramic wall tiles wrapping the shower complement the blue-green paint on the vanity. Large-format matte white porcelain floor tiles and white walls help reflect light and visually expand the room. A gray quartz countertop and matte black plumbing fixtures and other details lend a touch of modern flair.

The shower features a built-in bench topped with a slab of gray quartz that matches that used for the vanity countertop. “It adds character and also provides a spot to sit on or store extra products,” Harrison says.
A matte black single-function shower head and hand shower coordinate with other finishes in the bathroom and offer versatility. “It’s easier to clean the shower with the hand shower,” Harrison says. The custom tempered glass enclosure has a matte black door handle and hardware. Two matte black hooks outside the shower keep towels or robes close.
A large operable vinyl window over the toilet is framed in black for a bold stroke. A second operable window inside the shower also helps with ventilation. The bathroom also has an exhaust fan on the ceiling (not shown).
The shower floor is matte white ceramic penny round tiles with an oatmeal-colored grout. “We wanted something to contrast with what we used on the bathroom floor, and with a little more grip,” Harrison says.

The compact but hardworking vanity has eight soft-close drawers and a large cabinet. “We custom-make all of our cabinetry,” Harrison says. “It’s all maple, a nice paint-grade and durable wood. The vanity is a decent size for [the son] and any guests coming in.”
A combination of matte black pulls and knobs adds a modern touch. The mirror has rounded corners and a thin matte black frame that coordinates with the hardware. Two matte black sconces with fluted frosted glass shades flank the mirror and complement other finishes in the space, for a cohesive look.

Other matte black details include a contemporary faucet, a towel ring and a toilet paper holder. The gray 2-centimeter quartz countertop has subtle white veining and a 1½-inch mitered edge for a chunky appearance. “It gives it a sleek, modern look,” Harrison says.

Harrison used a pocket door between the bathroom and hallway to save space. “It doesn’t require the room needed for a swing door,” she notes.

Bathroom at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple with three kids; this hall bath is for their young son
Location: Newport Beach, California
Size: 70 square feet (6.5 square meters)
Designer: Taylor Harrison of Streamline Construction
The efficient layout features a single-sink vanity with abundant storage, an easy-to-clean skirted toilet and a spacious walk-in shower. Harrison left plenty of breathing room between the elements to give the space an airy feel.
Gray-blue matte picket tile in the shower draws the eye in to emphasize the length of the room and make a statement. “We chose the tile first,” Harrison says. “The homeowners travel a lot and said every bathroom they’ve gone to has a ton of color, so they wanted to pick something with color for here. We also wanted something for a young boy, but something he could grow up with. This was a way to add color and flair to the bathroom.”
Blue-green paint on the vanity complements the tile. White walls and 12-by-24-inch matte white porcelain tile flooring allow the shower and vanity to pop.
Wall tiles: Reine picket in Gentleman Grey, 3 by 12 inches, Bedrosians Tile and Stone; toilet: Malibu II, Icera USA; paint colors: Dark Lagoon (vanity) and Warm White (walls), Dunn-Edwards
