Kitchen Makeovers
Before and Afters
Before and After: 4 Fresh Green, White and Wood Kitchens
See how the popular color trio plays out in different balances of colors and materials
Wood and white make for a popular and familiar combination, but add in green and suddenly you’re in new territory. Will you take your design in an earthy direction? Bring on the zing? These four kitchens with green, white and wood palettes show that whichever route you choose, you’re headed toward a refreshing look.
After: The kitchen area is roughly triangular, with the island set on the longest edge of the triangle. Although that means it’s at an angle to the dining and living areas, the placement made sense for both the kitchen layout and how the space relates to the other areas in the open plan. The new island has V-groove paneling in an earthy green (Treron by Farrow & Ball), a soapstone counter and storage on the stool side. Green veining in the soapstone picks up on the island base color.

After: Wicker stools contribute to that warm, organic feel the homeowners wanted. A handmade brass light fixture with clear glass shades adds an artful element while keeping sightlines open. The new custom range hood not only feels airier than the previous blocky one but also brings in a touch of artistry. And handmade zellige tiles on the backsplash have a glaze that bounces light around.

2. Bigger Deal
Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: Calvin and Amy Girard and their two kids
Location: Leawood, Kansas
Size: 303 square feet (28 square meters)
Designer: Nina Schmidt of Schloegel Design Remodel
Before: Cabinets from the 1950s, cracked and insufficient countertops and a tight layout put this Kansas kitchen firmly in the redo-ready category. Designer Nina Schmidt knocked the space back to the studs and pushed it 10 feet into the backyard, adding 140 square feet and giving her plenty of room to create a more efficient setup.

After: Schmidt placed the new range opposite an island with seating for four and plenty of countertop space. Rift-sawn white oak cabinets in an almond stain bring warmth and a homey feel and help set off the deep green-gray island base (Laurel Woods by Sherwin-Williams). Red oak flooring complements both.

Two countertop materials (marble-look quartz for the island and soapstone-look quartz for the perimeters) and two types of cabinet hardware (pulls and knobs) add interest without busyness. Touches of gold and brass, such as via the faucet and the sconces over the sink, bring a lively gleam.
Schmidt also added a mudroom, seen here at the back left, for better access to the patio.

3. Modern Love
Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A retired couple and their dog
Location: Bradenton, Florida
Size: 312 square feet (29 square meters); 12 by 26 feet
Designer: Ann Marie Hoeksema of Epoch Solutions
Before: Sandwiched between interior walls, this Florida kitchen was cut off from the dining and living areas as well as from views and access to the outdoors. The homeowners also wanted a snazzier, more colorful design that would fit the 1960s home. They tapped designer Ann Marie Hoeksema for the remodel, which went so well that they ended up renovating the whole house.

After: Walls came down, the ceiling gained height, and all of that bland midtone wood got the boot. The new kitchen is now open to a breakfast area (seen here) as well as the dining and living areas (not shown). Copious white finishes form a bright backdrop for the walnut island base and chairs, art gallery-style features and exuberant backsplash tile, which you’ll get a better look at in the next photo.

Elongated hexagonal picket tile in buoyant shades of green and blue sets a midcentury modern tone and draws eyes from every corner of the open plan. The colors are picked up in nearby pillows and a vase, but otherwise the space celebrates mostly white and wood, letting the walnut’s beautiful grain have its moment. The majority two-tone palette also pulls focus to the artistic touches, such as a five-pendant linear chandelier, a custom bench with storage drawers at the side of the island and a custom walnut box set into the upper cabinets,

4. Sage Advice
Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A young couple with a child
Location: Beaverton, Oregon
Size: 160 square feet (15 square meters)
Remodeler: Art Kulch of JDI Construction NW
Before: The layout and size of this 1970s Oregon kitchen suited the homeowners just fine. Less fine were the aging cabinets and appliances, laminate countertops, beige tile flooring and two-level peninsula. A drop-down ceiling feature with a fluorescent light wasn’t ideal either. Remodeler Art Kulch came on to handle the remodel.

After: Kulch nixed almost every element to start almost from scratch. Sage green anchors the new design, both on Shaker-style cabinets and the base of the new single-level peninsula. Wood-look vinyl flooring and wood floating shelves add to the natural feel, and faux leather stools pick up the color. Splashes of gold (here in the stool legs and faucet) add shine, while glazed white ceramic tile and white wall paint bounce light and create a bright but calm backdrop.
The ceiling is now flat too, for a clean expanse that caps off the look.

1. Getting Into the Groove
Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple
Location: Sacramento, California
Size: 300 square feet (28 square meters)
Designer: Jada Gilbert of Design Shop Interiors
Before: Too much of a good thing sometimes applies even to kitchen storage. Numerous cabinets combined with an overly large range hood made this California kitchen feel closed in even though it was part of an open plan. Plus, the predominantly white design felt a bit cold and bland. The homeowners wanted a warmer, more open, organic feel and brought in designer Jada Gilbert to handle the makeover.
