It's not a new idea by any means, but it's a good one. Who cares if a few old or unwanted books don't get returned? If they were your best 'keepers' they probably wouldn't have made it as far as the free box would they, so, meh. You can pick up paperbacks for pennies from charity shops. I can't see it working here though, from the lack of business the mobile library van does.

The best wee street libraries I've seen have been in defunct old red phone boxes, some really smart little set ups! I've also seen defibrillators in old phone boxes, in poky little villages miles from anywhere. (I'm assuming *someone* is trained to use them in an emergency!) Now if somethings going to be stolen there's more money in things like that than some old paperbacks, but they seem to be safe enough.

A book box made by my dad to bring a little pizzazz to our front yard.

We have a few free book boxes in our Bakersfield, Ca downtown neighborhood. This box my dad made is truly a show stopper! I love to see people looking at the box and enjoying it as much as they do the books in it.
