Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

Whites, soft grays and warm woods have dominated the kitchen style arena lately. But there are those who want to amp up the color in their kitchens. While some wade in with soft blues, others want to make dinner surrounded by hues like a sunny yellow or an electrifying cobalt. If you’re considering a cabinet makeover, check out these bold and beautiful paint options.
Tomato red. A Campbell’s soup can made iconic by Andy Warhol is a perfect piece of art for this jazzy kitchen. Even the oven range knobs match the red thermafoil on these cheerful kitchen cabinets.

Fiery orange. A shock of orange runs along the lower cabinetry in this open-plan kitchen, bringing the heat to the work zone without intruding on the rest of the calmer finishes in the adjacent spaces. The paint job was customized by applying many layers and then finishing it with hand polishing.

Lemon yellow. No matter how sleepy the homeowners are, this bright farmhouse kitchen must perk them right up in the morning. A pitcher of sunflowers is right at home in the yummy lemon yellow room. Note the way the designers painted the trim to match the cabinets. They did this around the windows and doors as well as on a narrow piece of molding around the ceiling to continue the brightness around the room.

Lemon yellow is a good choice for a more contemporary kitchen as well. Here, architect Alisa Block chose a yellow that’s bright but does not overwhelm the senses.

Kelly green. These homeowners wanted to play with bright color in their lake-house kitchen. A white backsplash and Carrara marble countertops provide a strong contrast to the invigorating hue, while wood floors and a wood island countertop warm things up.

Pistachio green. A soothing shade of green connects this light and airy kitchen with the outdoors. It also plays beautifully off the gray veins in the backsplash marble.

Distressed turquoise. The renovation on this historic Massachusetts farmhouse included a large dream kitchen for the restaurant-owning homeowners. A pleasing turquoise with a distressed finish works beautifully against the exposed brick wall. And we’ll give them bonus points for all the wonderful colors of the ingredients in the Mason jars.

Sky blue. This home’s style is a Victorian-bohemian mashup, and it certainly shows in the kitchen. The sky blue paint on the cabinetry is calmed a bit by a waxed finish and complemented by gold and deep-orange hues.

Cobalt. Though blue is generally considered to be calming, this glossy cobalt is energizing. There are a handful of different finishes and materials in here, including the stainless steel and wood countertops, brass hardware and black metal on the windows and light fixtures that all play off the bold cabinet color beautifully.

Eggplant. A basket of vegetables is a great source of inspiration for kitchen color palettes. This yummy eggplant is made even more beautiful by the warm metallic finishes on the hardware and faucets. And if you’re not ready to paint all of your cabinets, try using your saturated-color choice as a large accent like they did here, where using it on just one wall of lower cabinets was the right dose.

@Ceri Hart
I used spray paint on my metal cabinets (see comment above) - and learned it takes a lot of patience and time to get a really nice finish. To achieve the almost-automotive-grade finish I let each coat dry for several days, and then wet-sanded between every coat of paint, including primer, using increasingly fine grades of wet sandpaper (purchased at auto supply store not hardware store). Finally I hand-rubbed the final coat with rubbing compound. Also, you'd need a space with excellent ventilation and very clean: dust + spray paint = :-( and need to really heed temperature and humidity conditions.
I think you could achieve a decent finish with paint & rollers if you were willing to do thin coats with sanding and wiping between coats. A paint that takes thinning well would probably be your friend for this kind of job. Thin coats, wet sand between, and you would probably get a nice finish.
Good luck!
All of you who shared pix of painted cabinets in bright colors have my admiration for having the guts to do so. They ALL turned out stunning!!!! Great job every one of you!!!!
Another vote for doing what you like... but that can be white. Personally, I don't like the all white kitchens, I find most very sterile. But I've had white cabinets all my life and still prefer them in my own space. Then my walls are usually yellow or a Mid-C robin's egg kind of blue. In fact it kind of irritated me when white cabinets became the fad...who wants to seem to just follow a fad?? I keep hoping the fad will end so that I can go back to being a white cabinet rebel:) Got to say, tho, I really liked the red and orange cabinets shown in the article and posted by HOUZZers. Also found the eggplant kitchen elegant...but you know that it really is another variation on the faddish all grey kitchen (proving those CAN actually be very warm and inviting). A round of cheers to Ceri buying and then beautifully (and suitably) restoring salvaged retro cabinets! Cheers also to the former owner who took the care to remove them for reuse by another, rather than destroy them.
