Kimberly, so right. We painted our living and kitchen areas in our Houston house BM Grey Mist. We absolutely love it. It takes on a more taupe hue with our pale taupe sofa and reddish rugs in the living room but more of a white grey hue in the kitchen where there is much more natural light and against the shite cabinets and black countertops. We loved this color so much that when we painted the living areas of our Lakehouse, we painted the living area this color without testing it first. OMG—it was awful. The living room has large built in dark stained cabinets and even though the room gets a lot of natural light, it is Eastern light as opposed to the Western light in our Houston house. This paint just looked dirty. Never again will we paint something without testing first. Ended up going with Crisp Linen by BM or SW (can’t remember).

After adding a skylight in our dining room, we set out to refresh the walls by painting them white again. It took seven of those little test cans of different whites to find the right shade! It was astounding that once the test patch dried on the wall, the tint of blue or pink or yellow or green that was barely noticeable on the test card made all the difference in our final selection. Because of the skylight, the tint also changed quite noticeably throughout the day. Once we found the right shade, it was very obvious. It was fairly pricy to add up the cost of the test cans, but well worth the expense.

The article appealed to me in parts. As an Indian living in the north-eastern part of India, the suggestions given in para 1 and 2 donot apply to me at all. Or to any one in India. But from para 3 onwards, the suggestions seem approprate and useful. Thank you.
