Color Splash: Cool Blue Kitchens
Blue hues from azure to navy give your kitchen a glamorous touch
An unspoken rule of thumb in interiors is to never use blue in rooms such as kitchens or dining rooms where food is being presented. The idea is that blue tones are unnatural and make food look unappetizing. I'm not sure how true that is, but I do know that rules are meant to be broken and blue kitchens are looking cool and current for me.
Ease into the idea with a deep matte shade of gray blue on the cabinets. On some days it will look more gray and you will feel like you chose a good contemporary hue. On other days it will look more blue and you will pat yourself on the back for being daring.
Another way to transition into blue-kitchen territory is to pick the lightest shade of ice blue you can find. Your kitchen will feel modern and fresh, but other materials and colors such as wood and white countertops can take center stage.
As your appreciation for blue deepens, so will your spectrum. An azure-like teal adds bright visual interest to the lower cabinets of this modern kitchen.
Here a true blue lover went for it with different shades of blue cabinets, wall color, and even furnishings.
The right shade of pale blue can take on a timeless country feel with the correct pairing of period lighting, cabinet door faces, and drawer hardware.
A greenish-light blue can feel retro mod in a '50s-'60s spirit.
Turning to the dark side, navy blue is hot hot hot and midnight blue cabinets can feel glamorous and sexy. Yes, a kitchen can be glamorous and sexy.
If you like the navy blue idea but can't commit to all your cabinets, think about incorporating it into the center island and using lighter cabinets for the balance of the room.
Or incorporate a touch of navy with a mosaic tile backsplash. It looks seriously good with stainless steel appliances and gray cabinetry.
Do you want to give navy blue a shot but you worried it won't be hot forever? Try it on for size with paint color. It creates dramatic contrast with lighter cabinets. And if it feels too dark for you, can lighten up with a new paint color next season.
