All I can think about while reading this article is how easy those appliances probably are to hack. I'd rather not have an oven that can be remotely turned on and light my house on fire. I'd rather not have a tea kettle someone could remotely rig the timing on to turn off after 30 seconds just to annoy me. We haven't gotten wireless security right in medical devices where it could actually kill people (1). We haven't gotten wireless right in credit cards for contactless payments where people's bank accounts can be drained (2). We certainly haven't got it right in smart light bulbs (3). I don't think wifi-enabling anything before we've really thought about the consequences is smart at all. I think it's extremely reckless and ignorant. If it's on your network it's on the internet. If it's on the internet anyone can get access to it if they're persistent enough. I'll stick to my "dumb" appliances, thanks.
