First of all, our house is small. We don't have a fire place, but if we did, the TV wouldn't be over it. I am 100% in Tamara's camp on this. (and love the ground level room with the TV in a cabinet between the floor to ceiling windows and the stone fireplace.)

My family rarely watches television together. I usually stream things very late at night in the living room. The living room TV sits at eye level on a glass console. When we have guests in the room, (like when my writers' group comes over,) I usually have a mute screen saver turned on -usually a restful forest scene which will fade into the background and not detract from conversation.

On rare occasions we have a gathering to watch sports in the living room, but my husband doesn't like to watch TV in that room he is alone. He prefers to view his own TV from his recliner in the alcove off our the master
bedroom.

Our adult son streams movies and hockey games on one of his many computer monitors in the room he uses for VR programming.

A lot of times, I believe it is how you grew up. My mother banished the TV to the rec room when we were kids. Our living room was used for reading, curling up on the sofa to study, or for quiet conversation.

Airstream, I live in Scottsdale AZ have 4 fireplaces in my home, all a piece of art. Never ever would you find a TV over one of them.

I hear you, I had massive fireplaces in my log houses, with TVs on the wall beside the fireplace wall.
