Lots of pro's here so I think feedback from the other side would be good. I've met designers who were more interested in 'selling' why they find for you than just giving you suggestions on what would look good. I had a designer who charged upwards of $100 for any time spent in finding items and then a 20% fee if I bought those items. Now, a lot of you might think this is fair- but from clients perspective why should I pay you and additional 20% if you are getting paid for every minute you spend on the project already. I went and found stuff similar to what she suggested at 1000% less! A custom chair she recommend for $1500, I found a similar on sale at RH for $150!. And she got offended that I didn't use her vendor to buy?
Why kind of design service is this? To me, the value add is that the designer pass on their discounted price to the client. Otherwise it's like a doctor telling you that he will take a 20% markup on any medicine he prescribes after you've paid him his consult fee already!
When I ask her for her ideas, she says she'll think about it and get back so it's obvious she doesn't want to really give ides but sell stuff.
Designers need to rethink if they want to be sellers or designers. You can't have it both ways.

Not that it is the answer to everything but that is why you might consider an architect rather than a designer (that seems to work retail). When I do research for products it is to find the best value - that s what makes my services valuable - I save my client far more than i cost. If you want to bump up the price of a project go to a (retail) showroom where pay and bonuses are based on dollar sales - a conflict of interest i do not have. i work by the hour and don't have any incentive to have the project cost more but it makes me look good when it costs less. Make sure the arrangement is working for you.

I do provide grain bins for clients that build those projects if they want me to - i am a dealer and only charge 10% markup rather than the usual 30% - I have a certain amount of handling time and risk involved - i am not on my hourly rate at that point as that part has finished (design and CDs).
