It takes 5 gallons of water before my shower water is warm. I save the 5 gallons in a bucket (in the shower withe me). then I use that 5 gallons to flush the toilet. i have insulated my hot water pipes but the hot water tank is on the other side of the house from my bathroom. Poor planning i think but saving helps my water bill. Also i turn off the water after i am wet, lather up, and then turn the water on to rinse off.

Hi Laura,

Thank you for a great article.

As a landscape designer I am focusing these days only on drought tolerant gardens. What I explain to my client is that there are so many different options, that you can really design a garden that is not only drought tolerant but that also match the taste of the clients. It is now to the point that lawns look out of place and boring compared to what one can do with drought tolerant plants.

You may not want to water in the evening though, because that encourages mold on the plants if they don't have enough time to dry before nightfall. Water early in the morning.
