Eggplant Purple Makes Rooms Rich
Eggplant purple on walls or furniture offers a rewarding payoff: confident, luxurious rooms in homes from traditional to modern
I don't particularly like to eat eggplant (it's OK smothered in cheese and red sauce), but I do like to look at it. It's so rich and warm and confident. There is a reason it was once considered a royal color.
Often called aubergine (when you are trying to be French), eggplant isn't one exact color. It's a deep purple, sometimes reddish, sometimes bluer. It can be almost black or nearly gray. I like it as an accent and, to be perfectly honest, this entire article is inspired by my brand-new eggplant accent wall in my tiny, eclectic bedroom.
Here are several rooms boasting a little eggplant. Some are modern, some are lush and traditional. All are richer for it.

This very dark version goes with red, white and natural wood. As always, the color adds richness to the room (and I'll bet it makes it feel actually warmer too).
My new eggplant accent wall — it's small but powerful. I used Benjamin Moore's Kasbah and couldn't be happier with it.
A lighter, brighter version with matching throw pillows. This color is just a few shades away from magenta. Nice and vivid against the white. Sherwin-Williams' Kimono Violet is very close.
The saying should really be "cool as an eggplant." This dusty, grayish version is just so strong and laid back. It demands attention without screaming for it.
Eggplant doesn't have to be relegated to accent walls. By all means, paint the entire room. Paired with a crisp white trim, it's absolutely beautiful.
Eggplant in the kitchen, where eggplants belong. This brightens up an otherwise nearly sterile modern roomscape. It's a gorgeous shade. Mature Grape by Sherwin-Williams is very close.
More eggplant in the kitchen, with just enough gray in it to bring out the texture of the marble and just enough purple to pop against the white. I love this brave choice.
This is very nearly burgundy, but I'm still going to claim it for the eggplant team. One deep, rich spot makes this entire room look sophisticated and cozy.
Move beyond pastels and primary colors. Here's a lovely reddish version of eggplant in a child's room.
Aubergine Brooke Rug
My beloved Madeline Weinrib in eggplant. This would look amazing in an all-white room or layered in a multicolored boho casbah. Sigh.
Old Hickory Tannery Pressley Leather Sofa
A traditional Chesterfield with a touch of purple to keep it from being a little too reminiscent of pipe smoke and hunting dogs.
