Gosh I disagree, I think it gives it the right balance as a freestanding piece and I like the way it is perfectly centered on the millwork. Attaching it to the wall would have looked off.

I had an apt once with a vanity that also had a very slender wall gap. It drove me nuts as any broom handle wouldn't fit. I finally found a yardstick that I could use to pull out something that got stuck - even halfway down the wall. I could never figure out how to clean that sliver of a gap and gave up trying.

I suppose that's true, but still, it's hard to clean those little gaps.
