I managed to germinate five or six of these seeds (winter sowing
probably made it easier), but now I have tiny seedlings. I'm in it for
the long haul since I own my home, but should I bother planting things
around it while it takes its time growing this season? Or will it grow
fast enough so as not to be a completely bare spot all season long
? I look forward to the activity they'll bring to my home.

Asked previously, with little luck

I've grown this Ceanothus from wild-collected seeds many times. I've had great success with the boiling water treatment and cold moist stratification for 30 to 45 days (they have even germinated in the refrigerator!). But regarding growth rate, they're small the first year -- 6 inches, maybe 12 if you get them started early and they're happy. It takes a couple of growing seasons for them to approach the full size of 2 to 3 feet. Don't be discouraged when rabbits graze them down in the winter, sometimes within inches of the ground. They recover very quickly from the roots.
