I totally understand how you feel about finally getting your dream home. My recent marriage found me merging two households (my new stepson away at college) and thinking we would sell both houses and move into something smaller with less maintenance. Instead, after spending 4 months renovating "his" 1980 style home, we both fell in love with it and don't want to move. I've rented my 2009 home and we are happy as clams. At least now we have the option of selling a "move in" ready house when we are "move out" ready. For your amusement, I've attached a pair of before and after photos of our family room.

I understand it is hard to see your children grow up and make a life of their own. I'm watching my husband struggle with seeing his son as a 22 year old man and not a 12 year old dependent child. He should be proud of the terrific job he did raising such an outstanding human being.

Insightful, sensitive article, Mitchell...you did a terrific job clarifying the sometimes difficult transitional period in a parent's life.
