I had to choose between builder special gray, blue-gray and red for the floor carpet in our new construction home. I chose red because it is by far more cheerful than gray or blue gray would have been. I put a Persian rug at the front door to make for a more interesting look than plain red. This will remain our design backdrop until we can cough up enough money for heated floors on the ground level, as we live in a coastal area year round. It makes me happy in winter, but I have to think of ways to tone it down with layered area rugs for the summer. I thought of one idea that I am sending for your consideration.

Red adds cheer to the space, like this hand-knotted woolen Swedish flat weave in vermillion, apple and rose. http://dorisleslieblau.com/doris-leslie-blau/rug-gallery/swedish-flat-weave-n11132-rug
