My idea wasn't to match the existing finish, Kramno, but to completely change it out. Robin's egg blue? Pale ivory? Or pick your favorite color! I saw a couple of photos on Houzz as examples, but I can't figure out how to insert them in a post, cause Houzz won't let me copy them. Sorry.

OMG please don't paint any of that furniture. Painted furniture goes in and out of style as quickly and often as a girl changes her sweater set in the spring, and once you paint something the finish is never going to be the same. I mean, painting some piece that isn't particularly valuable anyway, or which already has a damaged finish is fine, but please please please don't paint any of that dining room furniture. My advice would be to paint the walls in some absolutely to die for color (or just one wall if the floor plan is too open to paint the entire room). I would remove the checked chair and the plant stand from in front of the windows. Then I would either slip cover the chairs or replace the two end chairs with something fabric covered. I would also replace the rug with something richer in color. Just my .02 worth!

Thank you for all your suggestions. I think I am stuck with my dining room as is for the time being. The decorating scheme may be pretty neutral with grays and golds, so I have pops of color in placemats, dishes, etc. I intend to move the wingback chair and the French chair with the end table into another room. I am looking for a secretary desk for that corner. Interesting how our tastes change over the years.
