John, Thanks for this great post! I am interested in rain chains for roofs without gutter systems. I have a craftsman style home without gutters (a french drain system is used). There are several areas where the water draining from the roof hits the landscape. I've added boulders to those areas but would also be interested in installing chains as well to help guide the water. I cannot find any information about the installation of rain chains where a house does not have a gutter system. Every rain chain is attached to a downspoutless-gutter system. In the one photo you show with the two chains coming directely from the roof, the installation is obsured in the photo. I have attached four photos from the front of my house that shows the roof line where the water drains and then the corresponding section of landscape & rock. If you or burtonarchitect have any suggestions for me about where I can go to look into gutterless rain chains, I would really appreciate it.

lisalnorris - Seems like what you need is a funnel that would catch water coming off of the roof and then direct it to a rain chain. At least that is what you need in the abstract; it would probably need to be some sort of custom construction, since I'm not sure such a product exists. Given your house, it's probably best to make, or have something made, that would fit with its design...something that at least matches the trim and/or the frames.
