Homeowners Prioritize Projects That Boost Curb Appeal
Among homeowners renovating their outdoor spaces, nearly half (46%) upgraded the front of their home, suggesting that curb appeal continues to be a priority. In fact, over half cited “improving aesthetics” as their top objective when investing in outdoor projects, according to the 2024 U.S. Houzz Outdoor Trends Study.
Of the homeowners who invested in exterior accents to enhance their curb appeal (31%), trimwork was the leading focus (59%), followed by columns or pillars (38%), awnings (25%), beams (19%), window flower boxes (18%) and shutters (15%).
White was the leading trim color chosen among homeowners (28%), followed by black (22%) and green (13%). The majority of renovating homeowners chose contrasting wall and trim colors (71%).
Seven in 10 homeowners upgraded their front door during renovations (70%). Wood was the most popular front door material (32%), followed by lited doors that include glass (26%) and fiberglass clad exterior doors with a wood or wood composite interior (18%).
Renovating homeowners opted to make a statement with a wide range of colors for their front doors, led by black (24%) and red (22%). White (18%), blue (13%), green (11%) and gold (7%) were also popular. Along with front door improvements, 1 in 8 homeowners upgrading outdoor features added new house numbers (12%).
Along with exterior accents, many homeowners upgraded their outdoor areas with softscape features such as plants, shrubs or trees (77%), beds or borders (66%), planters or planter boxes (46%) and lawns (27%). Hardscape features included upgrades to paths, stairs or steps (46%), patios or terraces (39%) and fences or property borders (23%).
For homeowners pursuing more significant exterior upgrades, nearly 3 in 5 homeowners upgraded their home’s wall surface (58%). Roofing (44%), windows and skylights (42%) and exterior doors (42%) were common projects, as well.
Wood was the leading wall surface material, with nearly a quarter of homeowners choosing natural wood (23%), used as lap (53%), vertical (49%) or shingle (24%) siding.
Though many homeowners chose a pop of color for their front doors, the majority stuck with neutrals when it came to exterior wall colors including white (23%), gray (19%) and beige (10%). However, a small but significant share chose colorful shades such as green (8%), blue (4%), red (3%), yellow (3%) and orange (1%).
Among renovating homeowners with a roofing project, nearly two-thirds completely replaced their roof (64%). The most common materials included asphalt-dimensional shingles (34%) and asphalt-3-tab shingles (19%).
More than 2 in 5 homeowners upgraded windows or skylights (42%). Of those, two-thirds fully replaced their windows (66%). Full vinyl was by far the most popular material for upgraded windows, chosen by over half of homeowners (52%).
