SAVE this article. Planning in advance is the key to a relatively easy kitchen redo, renovation, remodel, or restoration. Accurate measuring and drawing of the footprint of an existing kitchen is my first step: footprint of the room and then each wall area so you can see each space on paper. Note location of each outlet and all plumbing, windows, doors and moldings. I use 1/4” graph paper and make five or six copies of each to work with....you probably will not come up with the perfect layout on the first try.

Great for large budgets. Buying a house this summer - I am an old woman but will do most of the work by myself as I did in a previous house. I plan to rip out a new IKEA kitchen and sell it, and install antique salvaged 100 yr old cabinets and a nice old sink with drainboards. I will hire an electrician if needed as did before, but I can do carpentry and plumbing - it is easy - just like putting a puzzle together. With houses, the analogy is - There are new chevrolet people, and used Mercedes people - one is old quality and one is new cheap.

I love how in the last kitchen, the designer did not have any qualms about putting two sinks so close to each other. That would be fine for me.
