Talk to any engaged couple and they will most likely say they want a fuss-free wedding. When you’re having such an intimate affair, there’s often no better place than your own backyard. Is this you? Houzzers, we want to see your weddings at home.
Share your memories and the details of how your special day came together. Michele and Ryan Tansey bought their first home, a 1903 house in Seattle’s Central District, a year before their wedding. Not wanting to pay a high fee for a reception venue, the engaged couple instead decided to invest in their three-bedroom home and hosted 100 guests for their special day. “We didn’t want to rent a venue that would be gone the day after the wedding,” says Michele. “We put the majority of our budget towards landscaping and other home improvement projects that we’ll enjoy for years.”
Michele filled the house and garden area with potted plants to give it a lush feel. “I wanted the backyard garden to be green everywhere,” she says. All the flowers for the wedding day, mostly perennials and orchids, were bought by the bridesmaid and the man of honor from a farmer’s market a few days before and kept fresh in the basement.

Tell us about your home or property and how it works for weddings. This dreamy ballroom is one of many buildings on a picturesque 70-acre property in Sutton Forest, Australia. Patty Mouhtouris and Roger Keys are the owners of the historic Summerlees Estate, which has been a favorite venue for weddings and other special events since the 1890s. The couple has updated some of the dilapidated buildings, including stables, a gazebo and a cottage that is available to rent for guest accommodations.

Pictured here is the updated interior of the ballroom. This space in the present day augments the many wedding facilities on the couple’s property. Crystal chandeliers and Shabby Chic–style accessories work well for couples seeking a rustic wedding aesthetic.

With the help of close friends and family, the couple transformed their compact yard and home for their autumn nuptials. Martin’s sister bought flowers from a local farm and created all the arrangements. Comfy blankets covered hay bales to serve as seating for immediate family and close friends.
