Having three tons of construction grade sand delivered by a dump truck was half the fun...and less expensive than buying many bags of sand at a big box store!
The sand pile is located near a big oak tree and we can play in the shade around noontime for a couple of hours. We never worry about the sand "leaving the box" and we've never had any cats visit (that we know of!). Also, if we occasionally need a bit of sand for the yard or gardening, it's available.

Grown up sandbox. It's on the side of the house next to the vegetable garden so doesn't take up any space at all. Solar lanterns help out at night.
