@dubyel : I understand your arguments about choosing laminate countertops, they certainly are cheaper, lighter and more versatile. I've had laminate in my parents' house... these counters are still there but are in dire need of renovation : scratches, burns, stains that won't go away. They're certainly not very robust, and each time I cook at my parents'house I have to concentrate and not put anything on the counter that could damage it. At home, I can put absolutely everything on my granite counters, even burning hot pans, nothing happens, these things are designed to withstand a nuclear war. Ever since I've had granite, I wouldn't be ready to change for anything else.

is laminate in the US still made with linseed oil?

I don't think laminate like that used for countertops was ever made from linseed oil. Perhaps you're thinking of linoleum that was used primarily for flooring? Formica laminate was invented about 60 years after linoleum and originally used fabric and Bakelite resin. Now manufacturers use sheets of paper bonded with resins under heat and pressure.
