If your TV is mounted over a fireplace, is that heat not bad for the TV set?

If the house was built with the wiring there for a TV, then it has extra built in to protect the TV.

As long as you leave the space suggested by the TV manufacturer/installer you should be ok, particularly if you have some sort of mantel with a steel underlay. This usually results in the TV being too high. The motorized arm that pushes the TV out a couple of inches and down as much as 27" comes in handy. But when utilized you can not have the fireplace on. If you want a fire going and the TV going at the same time you are relegated to living with it hung higher or put off to the side.
