To volleyball1mom - fans with sail cloth are primarily aesthetic. They will move some air, but nowhere near as much as a hard-bladed fan.

I agree with mzloolou. I have three Hunter/cast iron/oil bath/made-in-Memphis fans that are over forty years old. Until recently I turned them on in April and off in early October...for six months they ran 24/7. They are rock solid: no wobble, no noise, no gimmicky looks to go out of fashion. Painted the same or similar color as the walls or ceiling they are unobtrusive. I'm downsizing and moving soon and will definitely take the fans. I regret they aren't available now because they are certainly the best.

kati douglas, looks like a matthews fan Irene-5HLK.

as for those asking about the dc fans, the basics is that they have a better motor that works more efficiently than an ac motor. most dc fans will start around $400 and go up from there. they tend to have more speed settings, are very quiet, and you have to use a remote control to change the settings. you cannot use a regular wall fan controller with them. they make special wall units that have a battery in it for these type of fans. the wall controller is around $50 to $100.
