fwietzel1011 Short answer: 28" - 34" above your high bar (42" bar plus 28" = 70" or 42" plus 34" = 76") OR 72" from the floor which ever way you prefer to measure. As you can see there is a variance depending on height of people (don't want a 6'5" person hitting their head on the light as they lean over the bar) as well as use for task lighting vs ambient lighting.

what if I have a ceiling fan near the island that I want to hang pendant lights from? Would this be too much?

@dorothycurto Unless the pendant light(s) are on a solid rod, they will shake & shimmer when the fan is on. Draw out your design in scale for you to decide whether or not you will like the look. There are plenty of fans with light kits and many light kits are sold separately. Make sure you get the proper match for your brand of fan. You also might want to contact the fan company for info on adding light kit with pendant.
