We have a very light colored brick fireplace surround. I used scrubbing bubbles and it worked great! Might be worth a shot before you get involved with TSP!

After hiring 2 different companies to clean our sandstone wall of fireplace we used acid cleaner for the first layer of brick right above the fireplace with the worst soot. Second we mixed baking soda with water to a loose paste, painted it on with a brush brick by brick then sopped it off with rags. Worked perfectly and no chemicals except that first layer.
