I always have a large variety of annual and perennial flowers in my yard every year so I see what attracts them most. The white alyssum always has a lot of tiny pollinators hovering around it and it smells wonderful. The larger bees love the Monarda and Walkers Low Catmint most. The catmint also attracts hummingbird moths which are fun to watch.

Here in Texas we have some wonderful native plants that attract pollinators. One of my favorites is kidneywood. While not a flashy shrub, it attracts a huge variety of pollinators. Three years after I planted one at our family farm, I saw more tha 10 species of pollinators having a feast on the tree’s tiny blossoms. It’s quite drought tolerant once established. Rue is also a favorite of pollinators. Grey/green foliage is a nice contrast in the garden, and the small yellow flowers bloom all year for me. Wonderful scented leaves as well!

Great article! I appreciate the advice about planting in blocks of color. I’m a big fan of permaculture incorporating wildflowers and Cottage garden plants with lots of color. I just bought all my seeds for spring and I plan to dig out 2 of our big flower beds with the kids and turn them into pollinator gardens. This info will definitely help me decide how to plant/sow.
