How should we plant a sinkhole area? It is about 12 inches deep and 20 feet wide. We tried filling it with soil, but over 20 years it is back. We are very careful not to use chemicals because we know that the rain water comes out in the river not too far from us. Have asked others but no one seems to have an idea. help! Moving isn't an option.

Sinkholes are both an infiltration issue and a safety issue. Not every sinkhole is a liability, but a 20 ft. wide depression is a cause for concern. HERE is a link with info on insurance and legal issues.

I think you have to treat the area with caution. People who live on the edge of a cliff use fencing to prevent falls, and you should do a similar action. Routing more water toward this area would increase the underground erosion that caused the subsidence. Instead I would plant deep rooted tall grasses. In central Texas that would be Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) or Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) as they take both dry and wet conditions. If the area is shaded I would go with Inland Sea Oats (Chasmanthium latifolum). These bunch forming grasses don't need to be mowed or cut back, so no one needs to walk across the depression for maintenance. Dwarf Berberis or Ilex might also make good impenetrable cover.
