There are two things here that make the area around the fireplace cozy. One is that there is a big seating area which has been adorned with a pillow. This invites you to curl up right next to the fire to read a book or just to watch the dance of the flames. The other thing here is the shelf of framed artwork above the fireplace. Checking it out gives you an excuse to come closer to the fire to keep warm.

It seems perfectly cozy but without the fireplace it just wouldn't be the same, would it?
If you do like matching decor, however, that can certainly be done around a fireplace. The trick here is to create the layout of the room without regard to the fireplace at first. Then just bring those tones into the fireplace area (as was done with the ceramic pot here) and you've got yourself a cozy design with a fireplace to boot.
If you want a really opulent room then it's best to go with a simple fireplace. Here there is a bit of ornate design in the fireplace but it doesn't stand out too much because of its simple white color. This allows the rest of the room to be the focus of the warmth with its red hues and many textiles.

This is a terrific example of how a fireplace doesn't have to be the center of a room's design to add warmth to the area. Here we can give attention to the artwork, the shelving units, the plant life and the furniture. And yet everything is situated in such a way as to make it possible to experience the warmth of the fire from anywhere in the room. It's cute and it's cozy.
