Picking up on C K's point about using what you have, I engaged a designer while my furniture was being shipped abroad. Since I had taken photos and measurements of individual items for shipping and insurance, I was able to show the designer photos of some of my favourite items and combinations. I felt this helped to define my preferences very well.

Together we worked out where to put existing furniture (including some that is quite traditional), what to reupholster for a new purpose, what new furniture to buy to suit the new house, and, inevitably, what things to dispose of. The designer suggested a radically different colour scheme for the warmer climate and proposed new flooring, paint colours and contemporary window treatments.

I still have quite a lot of the furniture I brought, some of it reupholstered or refinished, but the overall look is entirely new. It was a very worthwhile collaboration starting with just a few photos.

One more tip I would add: PRIORITIZE!! It's more easy to accommodate all desires in a decoration project, but it's often challenging -if not impossible- when the renovation project involves more architectural or structural elements. We all typically have an enormous list of wishes when it comes to our ideal home. Reality is that budget, space or other limitations can't afford all those wishes to be realized at the same time. When it comes to making choices, it helps to think beforehand what things in your wish list are a must or which are a nice-to-have.
