Good article. I'd also suggest making sure you know whether your pot has holes in the bottom (preferable). Decorate pots without holes can become waterlogged quite easily which is death for the succulents/cacti. Let water run through the pots with holes if the plant was dry to ensure the soil has a chance to absorb the water.

We live in the desert southwest and also experience gnats. It was suggested that we top off a plant's soil with a layer of sand. I just purchased a small bag, so we'll see...
