I think a lot depends if you have children or not. My husband and I both work from home but no longer have to set a good example, so things do spread out to the living areas, so what!?

We are planning on some built-ins in our living room/family room. Because they are in the living room, we are going to have cabinets that totally close off the "desk area", with book shelves above and some typical desk storage below. It's hard to explain but it will look great. We are going to use a combo of desk and TV cabinets to get the custom look of built-ins but the price of only semi-custom work!! (The "desk area" will be a TV cabinet with doors that close to hide the computers, papers, etc.) The kids will each have their own desk and I will have one too. (I want them close to me - and the kitchen - while on the computer and working on homework.) Perhaps if jryan needs the area to be tidy during non-work hours something like this would work for him/her too?

As for large work space, I have always loved Pottery Barn's Bedford's Project Table set. However, my husband is a neat freak so it would bug him immensely if I ever had such a desk anywhere in our house. :o) Good luck to the reader!
