Fantastic article which explains the design theory underlying each composition. As a compulsive dead header I have great difficulty leaving seed heads, but when I see finches feeding on my verbena bonariensis I manage to holster my clippers for just one more day.

The debate of how much deadheading to do in winter is always a lively one between designers, horticulturalists and gardeners alike. I tidy what I have to, remove mushy leaves because of the slugs they attract but leave seed heads as long as I can. What I loved in this garden was that it showed me how to think ahead and plan for seed heads and grasses to feature in winter vignettes - to be intentional rather than an oversight
