We just moved to a condo with a ceramic electric cooktop and a microwaved hood above the range. There is no venting outdoors, so what options do we have to replace the existing unit with something that does a better job with less noise?

DetailAddict, to get right combo for your kitchen and cooking needs, consider going a la carte. By that I mean buy an insert (the mechanicals) that fit your application and then buy or have fabricated the hood into which the insert will be fitted. The hood can then be metal or wood. Most good cabinetmaker level carpenters (as opposed to framers, etc.) can make one of your design for a reasonable amount of money. I would suspect one made of metal would be more expensive.

Thanks, @Bruce...I ended up selecting an antique stove that has a built-in fume hood, but I may still want a "hood" to conceal the pipes where they go into the wall or ceiling. And wood is just fine with me :).
