Pendants defining space, yes.
But do remember lighting can be zoned in a kitchen, and that recessed overhead lighting can also be dimmed.

Kaaren Baumgartner, yes, I, too, am tired of seeing subway tiles. And shiplap walls, big, industrial light fixtures in a non-industrial kitchen, and barn doors. Those items seem like an affectation rather than style. I agree with the commenter above: "I guarantee we’ll be laughing at these tacky, monster pendants in a few years." I love pendant lighting but it should be attractive.

I think I am coming late to the gray and white and subway tile look for kitchens. For years, I was not in the market to remodel my kitchen, so I wasn't paying attention to the trends. Now I am getting my house ready for sale, so I am paying attention. Since I am just now paying attention, the gray, white and subway tile look is fresh and new(ish) to me and I still enjoy them. I have always wanted a white kitchen. Anyway, I am a little behind the times...... But I do agree the enormous pendants are not practical or attractive to me. And getting older, I want a comfortable stool.....but with style of course!!!! I live in a small house and every inch of it has to earn it's right to be there by being practical, functional and has to look great!
