Kitchen of the Week: Spacious and Industrial in Barcelona
Warehouse touches nod to this Spanish kitchen's roots, but contemporary splashes keep it current and comfortable
Once part of a warehouse for a women's clothing store, this kitchen retains bits and pieces of its original industrial structure. "The place was a wreck but structurally interesting," says architect Felipe Araujo of Egue y Seta. The clients love to entertain and wanted a kitchen that was spacious, stylish and practical. After knocking down the surrounding walls, Araujo and his team integrated industrial-inspired materials with splashes of contemporary style.

Araujo restored the vaulted ceilings, wooden beams, door frames, moldings and flooring and used minimal finishes to preserve the original warehouse look.
The cement floor tile has a contemporary look, but the Escher-like monochromatic pattern feels timeless, and the cement references the original warehouse floor. This tile, made in Spain, cost about $3,200.
The glass partition, filled with artificial bamboo, is something of a trademark for Araujo and his team. The clients had seen it on another project and wanted the installation in their own home. The transparent walls let light in; the faux fronds add a layer of privacy.

Custom cabinetry is made from the same salvaged wood as the custom-designed dining table. A small refrigerator is integrated into the cabinetry at the end of the workspace. A cupboard behind the glass and bamboo partition holds another larger refrigerator and freezer combo. The kitchen cabinets and custom granite counter, sink and stainless steel fixtures cost about $6,900 total. The client supplied the pendants.
Removing the hallways and unnecessary walls "made the kitchen the heart and soul of the home, the connecting piece between the more intimate areas of the apartment and those more socially oriented," Araujo says.
The clients brought all of their fairly new and working appliances from their old home. Crisp white subway tiles with dark gray grout line the back wall all the way up to the ceiling, contrasting with the salvaged wood cabinetry and shelving. The full tile installation cost about $815.
