Windows in the kitchen - usually taken for granted as being a good thing but they can be the source of eye strain - they often introduce copious quantities of direct light which artificial light cannot compete with and this makes for relatively very dark spots in the kitchen which causes your eyes to have to constantly readjust. This is similar to the wedding venue phenomenon - very bright windows in a lower lumen room - often the windows are right behind the wedding party - makes it really hard to toke good pictures spontaneously. Ideally a little more thought would be involved and the windows would be left and right of the main table (or food prep area) or the use of skylights or sun tubes incorporated. A row of (frosted/patterned) glass block above the countertop can be a good way to introduce natural light without some of the drawbacks.

I love all of these kitchens but the Dordogne kitchen above causes me to swoon--so tranquil and I imagine perfectly fits with the rest of this home. We all have to live long enough in a space and cook in the kitchen to know what to do with it to make it our own. It is so much more than about eye appeal, the kitchen's heart beats.
