You do realize, don’t you, that all over the world people live long, healthy lives and never have access to elevators or personal cars that carry their groceries?

What a nice article. As my nest is emptying, I find I use less and less of my 1300 square foot house, and I am so ready for the next stages of purging no-longer-necessary stuff. Our lives are changing. I think your points about beautiful architectural features and tall windows are the most meaningful to me. Anyone can pare down, or arrange furniture or change the paint color. But it's the woodwork, craftmanship and built-ins that really draw the eye and make you relax in your space. We've already moved on to the small refrigerator. Its lovely to stop at the bakery or farmer's market almost every day. We cook more healthful meals because we're always buying fresh and purposefully. Teenagers need space. But now that they've grown, I'm glad we didn't put on that addition I thought we needed so badly.
