Gosh, built-in speakers aren't even necessary anymore now that there are wireless Bluetooth speakers. They are awesome. we have two that are synced up and we can put them anywhere in the house.

This is our second holiday season after our kitchen remodel, which involved tearing out a wall to install a large island making a great room. We typically have 10-16 people over the holidays. Here is what I found worked:

1. I have two full-sized fridges in the house, one in the basement. It takes some planning but I have only the things in the upstairs fridge that we need for that day. Once the day is done, I put the leftovers in the downstairs fridge and bring up the food for the next day.

2. I created a bar area away from the island/kitchen where people can pour drinks or a glass of wine without getting in the way of the cooks.

3. I keep the island for meal prep and put the snacks in the seating area so people hung out there more.

Does this stop people from hanging out in the kitchen? Not really, but it does help. My daughter still decided that she just had to make Mojitos in the kitchen, and my sister-in-law had brought a dish that needed to be prepped and cooked at our house.

But I am not stuck behind a wall anymore missing out on Christmas while making a feast, and I have a lot more helpers around the island that I can put to work. That to me is the important thing!
