One of the many positive benefits of a living roof is that it increases the diversity of wildlife, including insects, where the structure is. You can have some control over which insects are present by carefully selecting the plants you use, and by adding plants or 'insect motels' which attract the desirable species (butterflies, pollinating insects, and parasitic wasps, for instance.).
If you can obtain a custom-made lightweight soil mix for the growing medium, it shouldn't normally add more than about 15 lbs/ square foot to the roofs weight at a maximum depth of soil. ( or @7 kilos/ 930 sq. cm, if I did the math right...)
Less if you use a shallower soil.
That will be less than if an adult is standing on the bare metal roof.

AECDaily.com offers a free Continuing Education course in the basics of living roofs at:
http://www.aecdaily.com/course.php?node_id=1607002&tabidx=viewcoursedetails&company=American+Hydrotech%2C+Inc.

If that link doesn't work for you, search the site for "Green Roofs: A Sustainable Strategy".

Registration at AEC is required, but it is free, and you can take their test(s) to earn CE/ lifetime learning credits, if you'd like. :-)
The courses are pdf files, btw.
