One thing to bear in mind when painting a fence a dark color to achieve a receding effect is what's behind the fence.?

if for instance, there is a two story house painted white or a light color and that house is close to the fence line, the contrast with a dark fence can have the opposite effect .

in those instances lighten up a couple of values and layer plantings to create depth.

The whole point of this is to keep the eye moving . We humans by design are programmed to see contrast and edges. The more you eliminate obvious edges and contrast , the easier it is to create the illusion of depth.

I painted mine dark, too and took out the webbed inside and added metal rope wore. DIY project that had everyone talking about how much your eyes just went through it yet it provided the separation neede. I love Behr’s Evenng Hush. I think it’s an old colour palet, but it’s the perfect charcoal grey I use for over and over.
