Cathy,
Your thought and hand crafted solution are realized with care from the carps and your inspiration as well.

All should be commended. Great choice of wood and the bottom mineral edge with rustic bark outline is really refreshing.

Here comes the but. On a scrap, try the same finish and then rub it out with steel wool or Scotchbrite. Never sandpaper. `No machines and always by hand with the grain. Apply a second coat of tung oil, 50/50 with mineral spirits, allow to dry for two days. Rub that out with white Scotchbrite. Then butchers wax and buff to desired shine.

The Minwax is a little thick when it comes down to fine finishes. Next time start with reduced oils and allow each coat to harden before tearing it down. much more hand work on the finish, but even more rewarding to the eye at the end.

Silly me, just went over the article while saving images and read that you agree about the finishes.

Happy healthy new year to all.

Absolutely gorgeous. I stumbled onto your most interesting project while searching for ideas for mantel height. I have purchased cherry wood with some live edge and had explained to my craftsman that I wanted wrap around light bridge, mantel, & hearth to accent the stone. He has a good idea of what I want but this really clinches it. Thank you so much for posting this.
