I think Timothy is right on the money. Build a good envelope, orient your house according to the sun and place windows in the right place. After that you can add all the bells and whistles. We will be starting our build next year. We have a south facing lot. House will have over hangs to let the sun in in winter, shade in summer. We will have some solar - best to pre wire and pre plumb, cheaper in a new build.
The way I look at it is, I want the cheapest monthly up keep as possible and if that helps the environment great. I will be on a fixed income and every dollar helps.
