Modern Icons: The LC4 Chaise Longue
The Ultimate "Relaxing Machine" Rests Easy Anywhere
This chaise is a sculptural and sleek piece of furniture that will up the style factor in any room of your home tenfold. It still looks so futuristic and sleek that it is very hard to believe it was designed way back in 1928. Its designers Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand were pioneers in using tubular steel in furniture design. While Le Corbusier viewed his houses as "machines for living," he called this chair "the relaxing machine" for inside the home.
The chaise was inspired by the traditional French chaise longue, known in English as a "long chair." The modern twists the designing trio added are so striking that it can be placed in a big empty space without being swallowed by it.
The LC4 is also good at making a stark industrial space a whole lot sexier. The main body of the chair detaches from the black steel frame, and it can be adjusted to countless positions along the frame.
The chaise comes in a variety of canvas and leather fabric choices; cowhide is one of the most popular.
Cowhide adds a somewhat rustic and unique pattern and texture to the sleek and sculptural chaise. It's a very interesting juxtaposition.
Every time I look at this shot I imagine Woody Allen lounging in the LC4, complaining at a mile a minute to some long-suffering analyst who lines his pockets with Woody's neuroses. But that's they way my brain works. What do you imagine when you look at this space?
Note that the chair can move from full lounge to upright (I could not find one image of the chair upright anywhere; obviously the photo stylists know it looks most dramatic in full lounge position). It is sort of a funny vision to imagine someone in full lounge here at a cocktail party, while others are perched properly with nice posture on the other chairs.
This chair is the aesthete's La-Z-Boy; after setting down your attache, loosening your tie or your skirt buttons and kicking off your shoes, it is a wonderful spot to relax with a cold drink.
